Close Ring Expert
Ringing Regulations Article 36.5 of the Commission Regulation (EC) No 939/97 defines a close ring to be "a ring or band of metal in a continuous circle, without any break or join, which has not been tampered with in any way, of a size which cannot be removed from the bird when its leg is fully grown; after having been applied in the first days of the bird's life, and which has been manufactured for that purpose" Statutory Instrument No 1220 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act (Ringing of Certain Birds) Regulations 1982, Schedule 2, specifies the maximum internal diameter of the rings that can be applied to each species. The sizes were developed to ensure that the rings cannot be fitted to birds when adult. When a ring shows obvious signs of having been tampered with, or can be removed from a bird's leg, it clearly demonstrates that the bird is not ringed in accordance with the regulations.
Roger Caton has developed a specialised interpretation for detecting tampered rings supported by photographic evidence and expert witness reports.
